Typical prices
| Job | Typical Long Island range | What drives it |
|---|---|---|
| Level 2 charger install, panel has capacity | $1,000 – $2,500 | Dedicated 40–60A circuit, short-to-moderate wire run, permit. Most homeowners land around $1,200–$1,800 nationally; Long Island labor runs higher. |
| Long wire run / detached garage | Adds to the base price | Trenching or long runs through finished walls are the biggest variable after the panel. Get it itemized. |
| Load-management device instead of an upgrade | Ask for a price | Lets a charger share capacity on a 100A or 150A service. Often cheaper than a service upgrade. Ask whether it's an option before upgrading. |
| Panel / service upgrade needed first | +$1,000 – $5,000 | If the load calculation shows no room. See the panel upgrade cost guide. |
The three questions that set your price
- Does the panel have room? A load calculation answers this. Many Long Island 100-amp houses don't, once central air is counted.
- How far is the panel from where you park? Short runs are cheap; finished basements, long driveways and detached garages aren't.
- Upgrade or load management? A load-management device can let the charger share capacity instead of paying for a service upgrade.

Frequently asked questions
What's the cheapest way to charge at home?
If you drive modest daily miles, a Level 1 cord on an existing 120V outlet may be enough. For a Level 2 charger, the cheapest installs have the panel close to the parking spot and spare capacity in the panel.
Do I need a permit for an EV charger?
Yes. A new 240V circuit is electrical work that's inspected by an approved agency, and a licensed installation is typically required for the PSEG Long Island rebate.
Is the federal tax credit still available?
No. The 30C credit ended for chargers placed in service after June 30, 2026.
