Lighting & Ceiling Fan Installation on Long Island

Popular projects

  • Recessed lighting: slim LED wafer lights in living rooms and kitchens, IC-rated for insulated ceilings.
  • Ceiling fans: fan-rated boxes, new switch legs and remote or wall controls.
  • Dimmers and smart switches: many smart switches need a neutral wire, which older boxes sometimes lack.
  • Outdoor and landscape lighting: GFCI protection, weather-rated fixtures and buried cable done to code.

What moves the price

  • Access: an open attic above is easy; a second-floor ceiling with finished space above takes longer.
  • Whether a new circuit is needed, and whether the panel has room for it.
  • Plaster ceilings in older homes, which take more care to cut and patch.

If your panel is full or you're on fuses, see panel upgrades.

Frequently asked questions

Can recessed lights go into an insulated ceiling?

Yes, with IC-rated fixtures (most modern LED wafer lights are). Under an attic, the electrician should also keep the vapor and air seal in mind.

Does a ceiling fan need a special box?

Yes. A fan needs a fan-rated box or brace; a standard light box can pull loose.

Do I need a permit for new lighting?

New circuits and new fixture locations are electrical work that needs an approved agency's inspection. Swapping an existing fixture usually doesn't, but ask your electrician.
