Electrical Safety Inspections on Long Island

When Long Island homeowners order one

  • Buying: to price out what the home inspector flagged (FPE or Zinsco panels, knob-and-tube, double-tapped breakers).
  • Selling: to fix problems before the buyer's inspector finds them, and to clear unpermitted work before the CO search.
  • Insurance: when a carrier asks about panel brand, wiring type or service size.
  • Older homes: before a renovation, or simply for peace of mind.

Two kinds of "electrical inspection"

On Long Island, towns don't inspect electrical work with their own staff. Permitted work is inspected by anapproved third-party agency, which issues the certificate the building department and PSEG Long Island rely on. A safety evaluation is the electrician's professional opinion of the whole house. You may need both: the evaluation tells you what to fix, and the agency certificate proves the fix was done to code.

What's typically checked

  • Panel brand, condition, labeling, double-taps and breaker sizing
  • Service size versus actual load
  • Grounding and bonding
  • Wiring type: knob-and-tube, cloth, aluminum, ungrounded circuits
  • GFCI and AFCI protection where current code expects it
  • Smoke and CO detectors

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as the inspection PSEG needs?

No. The certificate PSEG Long Island and your town need comes from an approved third-party inspection agency after permitted work. An electrician's safety evaluation is advice for you, your buyer or your insurer.

My home inspector flagged electrical issues. What now?

Get a licensed electrician to evaluate the specific items and quote the fixes in writing. That gives you something concrete to negotiate with or to show the lender or insurer.

How do I find out if past work was permitted?

Ask your town or village building department for the property file and look for electrical certificates. Unpermitted finished basements and garage sub-panels are the usual gaps.
